Salman Khan is an Indian actor, producer, TV presenter and philanthropist. He is the eldest son of screenwriter Salim Khan and his first wife Sushila Charak. His grandfather was a Muslim from Afghanistan who immigrated to India and settled in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.
His stepmother is Helen, a former actress, who has co-starred in several movies with him. He has two brothers, Arbaz Khan and Sohail Khan, and two sisters, Alvira and Arpita. Alvira is married to actor/director Atul Agnihotri. Salman completed his studies at Saint Stanislaus High School in Bandera, Mumbai, and his younger brothers Arbaz and Sohail also completed their studies. Earlier, he and his brother Arbaz had studied at The Scindia School in Gwalior for several years.
He started his acting career with Biwi Ho to Aisi, but this was his second film Maine Pyar Kiya where he played the leading role and won him a film award for the best male talk show . He has appeared in many commercially successful films, such as "Saajan" (1991) and Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994), Karan Arjun (1995), Judwaa (1997), Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya (1998), Biwi No.1 (1999) and Hum Saath Saath Hain (1999), appeared in the highest-grossing film of his career for nine consecutive years, and this record has not been broken yet.
During his career, he participated in several charities. He founded a non-governmental organization called "Being a Human" to sell T-shirts and other products online and in stores. Part of the sales is used to support valuable businesses for disadvantaged groups. Khan has been the subject of several controversies, including certain legal troubles, such as the "fighting and running case", "Relationship with Aishwarya Rai", "Black Buck Hunting Case" and "His remarks on the 26/11 attack".
